P1: Explain how different sound elements are used

Sound is used in all kinds of media products, such as film, TV programmes, computer games, animation, advertisement and radio drama. Sound has an important way of telling a story and communicating meaning to the audience through different media products. Sound is used in different forms for different media products.

Diegetic sound such as sound effects and techniques such as narration are used in media products planned to educate the audience and help them understand a certain point. Educational products such as documentaries rely heavily on narrative construction to anchor a meaning. In addition to this, they also use non-diegetic sound to help set the scene, non-diegetic soundtracks are usually chosen to fit the time period of the music or link it to the information they are providing the audience with and establishes the mood for the audience. In the documentary; Searching for Sugarman. It starts with montage shots of Cape Town in South Africa, with a non-diegetic soundtrack, as an audience at first we just think it’s a normal song that has been added but later on we realise that these soundtracks that are added throughout the documentary are from the singer the documentary is about. This was done because the whole documentary is about the discovery of a singer called Rodriguez and they talk about how good of a singer he was, so the fact that his songs have been added on the soundtrack, allow the audience to listen to his songs and visualise how good of a singer he was.

Sound is also used to entertain audience; this is mainly used in fictional audio and audio-visual products. In radio products, the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound is vital as it creates an entertaining and engaging atmosphere.  Animated Disney films use diegetic songs as part of their narrative, this engages the younger audience to sing along with it and also familiarise themselves with the sound after watching the film. Disney films such as Frozen, is a musical film and is known for its main song ‘Let it go’ although this film was released in 2013, audiences today still familiarise themselves with the song and are able to recognise where the song was firstly heard.

Films also use sound motifs and incidental music to provide the audience with instant recognition. Such as when the film Incredibles 2 trailer came out, it used the recognisable theme tune it used in its first film, audiences were very excited towards this because not only was a new film of Incredibles released 12 years later, but audiences were able to familiarise themselves with where the song came from, without even watching the visual images.

News texts are used to inform the audience and distribute information through television. BBC news uses a dramatic sound at the start and the end of the programme. This is a key convention for news production as the loud and intense theme music portrays urgency to the audience.

Sound elements play just the same important part in media part like any other element needed in media products as audiences are able to recognise the sound instantly without needing the visual images.
